Changing Habits 

This is an important session for the participants, getting them to think about their own habits and how they might change their routines will assist you with teaching them to think of alternatives to their old habits. Have participant actively participate in this exercise. You may refer to this often as questions arise. 

Tell participants they might consider changing their routine in the morning to help break the habits that they associate with smoking. (Drinking coffee and having a cigarette, suggest showering first then having breakfast, brush teeth etc.)

Change locations that might "trigger" automatic responses (Get dressed in a different room, have breakfast in a different room, use your dining room, set the table with your good dishes, etc.)

Change the routine listens to music in the morning instead of the news or radio. Sleep in an extra 10 minutes, remember you are not smoking!

In the car, wash the windows, clean the ashtrays, with money saved from smoking consider having your car detailed and cleaned professionally, even in the winter!

Consider a different route to work, the store, errands notice houses, landscape, etc that you have never noticed.

Put a CD or tape in of favorite music, get a book on tape and listen to the story, look forward to hearing it each day.

Take deep breaths during these times of change, encourage the participants!

Tell your coworkers you are smoke free, and appreciate their support. Keep busy, stay away from smoking areas.

Change your break times, in good weather take a walk, sit in your car listen to a tape, and drink water!

At home clean the phone, throw out all ashtray, do not have one for "company", ask company to smoke outside, remember you are a smoke free home and car!

Do not sit at the table after you are done eating, get up, clean up and enjoy the day, do projects, walk, listen to music. Relax you have earned it!

Ask the participants each session how they are doing with these suggestions, encourage them and suggest a plan that is workable for their lifestyle. Ask if anyone is having any difficulties with changes to their routines each session.
