A. phagocytophila, Ehrlichia equi and the human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent were very similar, equal to one species.

The tribes Ehrlichieae and Wolbachieae were transferred to the family Anaplasmataceae and the Rickettsiaceae were eliminated.

Anaplasma includes 1/ Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) phagocytophila (which also contains the former E. equi and the HGE agent), and then 2/ A. (E.) bovis and 3/ A. (E.) platys.

Ehrlichia was emended by Dumler and coworkers to include 4/ Ehrlichia (Cowdria) ruminantium and the genus Neorickettsia is emended to include 5/ N. (E.) risticii and 6/ N. (E.) sennetsu.
