Mosquito larvicides include the organophosphate temephos (Abate); several biological larvicides such as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti, a bacterial larvicide), Bacillus sphaericus; methoprene, an insect growth regulator (e. g., Altosid,); several larvicidal oils (e. g., petroleum-based Golden Bear and mineral-based Bonide) and monomolecular surface films (e. g., Agnique, Arosurf).

Another example of biotechnological progress is diflubenzuron, a chitin synthesis inhibitor (Dimilin). Loss of chitin may endanger the mosquito to attacks from its enemies that then can enter the hemocoel.
