Alphaviruses are a group of mosquito-borne, enveloped viruses which can cause encephalitis, fever, arthritis and rash in mammals and birds. The nucleocapsid core has an external radius of about 205 Å. It consists of a positive-strand RNA genome surrounded by 240 copies of the capsid protein arranged in a T=4 surface lattice.
