Opium abuse is a norm and accepted culture in Bam but formally considered as a crime. Anecdotal evidence shows its prevalence before the earthquake up to 30 % for adult male and 5% for adult female.

This matter of fact was a major problem in the treatment of hospitalized patients and also dealing with out-patients who suffered from withdrawal symptoms.
