The provision of health and medical services is highly regulated in most countries. Many aspects of the practice of medicine and the delivery of healthcare are influenced by governmental policies and the presence of third-party payers (insurance companies and government agencies). There is an uneven distribution of services and access to medical care providers, both geographically and across income groups. As a result, there is both a high interest in promoting health and medical information and a desire to regulate its provision.

A note about the web pages and links used in this presentation: A major problem in citing web-based material as sources is that web pages and their locations lack permanence. Over time some of the links will not work properly.
