The number of deaths and YPLL were calculated from WSDH (1996)*.

The number of hospital bed-days pertaining to violence with firearms were calculated from CHARS (Comprehensive Hospital Abstract Reporting System).

Diagnoses pertaining to E-codes were unavailable from the Regence Washington Health data base. So, the outpatient-related component of the health index was not calculated, and therefore, the total YPLL figure 2,679 is underestimated. However, it is likely that the health index component pertaining to the outpatient visits is negligible for firearms.
