The steps of the RPI calculation method are:
  • Estimate the attributable risks pertaining to mortality and specific to the population of interest;
  • Use those attributable risks for estimating deaths associated with the risk factor acting on the population of interest;
  • Calculate the mortal component of RPI accounting for both deaths and YPLL;
  • Propose hypotheses allowing estimation of morbidity-related figures based on the attributable risks pertaining to mortality and on data collected on bed-days and outpatient visits;
  • Calculate the morbid component of RPI accounting for both bed-days and outpatient visits.

If the data on relative risks and/or prevalence of the risk factor are unavailable, propose method to infer the data estimates needed based on the available data.
