More than 18 000 people died in tornadoes in the United States from 1875 to 2000. The rate of death has been decreasing since 1925 from about 1.8 per million per year to 0.12 per million per year. This has resulted both from fewer killer tornadoes and from a decrease in the number of deaths in the largest-fatality tornadoes.
