Unfortunately, in 1990, doppler radar coverage had not yet extended to include the region of Plainfield, Illinois. The Plainfield tornado (F-5) resulted in 28 fatalities and 274 injured people (22). The extremely short time period between the tornado warning and the tornado's arrival in Plainfield and the odd shape of this particular tornado's funnel cloud made it difficult for observers to recognize the approaching storm as a tornado.
