The most intuitive measure of access (described in geographic terms) is the straight-line distance between a patient and the closest facility. The driving distance between the two points would seem to be a more accurate measure. Other measures include other facilities or travel across state or county boundaries. No one has compared the validity of one measure against another or a "gold standard." For this presentation, we will focus on the driving distance to the closest facility.
