The standard FOBT requires patients to collect six samples - it is not recommended to take the samples by the time of rectal digital exam. The collection is made 24 to 48 hours after eating a meat-free diet and avoidance of vitamin C, aspirin and aspirin-related drugs. If even one of the six samples shows blood, the test is considered positive.
