After ruling out non-causal explanations for the differences we had observed, we looked for causal agents that could have led to poor semen quality in mid-Missouri relative to the three urban centers.

In what follows, I will compare Minneapolis, Minnesota and Columbia, Missouri, two centers whose populations are similar in sample size and demographics, but very different in semen quality.
