Neurosyphilis may occur with early disease, in the form of meningeal or meningovascular disease. A stroke (cerebrovascular accident), especially in a young person, warrants evaluation for syphilis. In late syphilis, however, the best described forms of neurological involvement are general paresis and tabes dorsalis. Both are much rarer today than in the preantibiotic era.
