This is a patient education aid which demonstrates the basic microbiologic differences between health associated and disease associated dental plaque.

The left side of the tooth shows health associated plaque consisting of microaerophilic and facultative anaerobes. The right side of the diagram represents disease associated plaque which differs from healthy plaque only by the inclusion of strict anaerobic gram negative rods, cocci and spirochetes.

The anaerobes can be detected with a phase contrast microscope and with the BANA enzyme assay test.
