For adults, tuberculosis becomes one of three major causes of disease burden in developing countries. Tuberculosis imposes a major health burden on a country’s resources. WHO (1999a) estimated that TB in 1998 accounted for 7 % of all disability adjusted life years (DALYs). DALY is a quantitative indicator of burden of disease that reflects the total amount of healthy life lost, to all causes, whether from premature mortality or from some degree of disability during a period of time (Homedes, 1995).
