Between 1980-1986, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Cameroon among pregnant women rose from below 2% to under 5%. In 1999, 22,000 children were living with HIV/AIDS in the country compared to 69,000 in 2001. The adult prevalence rose from 7.73% to 12% over the same period (UNAIDS, 2003). Close to 1 million adults and children are currently living with HIV/AIDS in Cameroon with an estimated 210,000 AIDS orphans (UNAIDS, 2003). The groups hard hit by this scourge include among others free girls, long distant truck drivers and "uniform" officers.
