Best sources are usually nominative. Two types:
  • Registration systems, in place in some European cities from the 18th century and earlier. Yield estimates of the number of people who enter or leave city, as well as demographic events such as births, deaths, and marriages. Major drawback is that they only pertain to a few cities
  • Ecclesiastical records of births, deaths, and marriages exist for some societies back to the 16th centuries. These can (and do) yield estimates of population dynamics. Major drawback is lack of complete coverage in religiously heterogeneous societies.
