Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was examined in two towns in southern Israel in 1985 in Jewish children. BS-Beer-Sheva the capital of the Negev, and DIM- Dimona, a town of relatively recent immigrants to Israel. High rates of IDA were found, 36% in Beer-Sheva in 1 year olds and 61% in Dimona. Ministry of Health recommendation were issued in the late 80’s suggesting that all children 5 months and older should receive iron supplementation.

In 1993 the effect of this recommendation was checked in the locations surveyed in 1983, and it was found that the rates of anemia had decreased considerably.
