IDA * Iron deficiency anemia
ID ** Iron deficiency

Delaying tying off of the umbilical cord, by 30 to 60 seconds can increase the circulating iron by 34 mg which is 25-30% of the circulating iron in a newborn.
This is equivalent to iron obtained by infants during 5 months of breast feeding. Breast feeding also delays the onset of IDA

Additional measures include:
- Exclusive breast feeding for 4-6 months.
- From 6M require additional supplies of iron, from supplemented formula.
- Can use preventive iron supplementation in high risk groups where foods rich in iron are not readily available.
