Micronutrient malnutrition affects approximately "2 billion" people worldwide. The adverse sequelae of micronutrient deficiencies are severe and include premature death, blindness, growth impairment and stunting, mental retardation, learning disabilities and low work capacity.

The first milestone in tackling micronutrient deficiency was the study by the USAID showing that Vitamin A deficiency may be responsible for increased mortality in children.
