At present the doctors in western countries use progestins for threatened or habitual abortion very seldom because there is no strong evidence that these drugs can prevent abortions and there are also potential risks to the fetus (virilization and genital deformities).

Contrary to abovementioned, in many FSU countries the obstetricians continue using the progestins, including ones, which are not used anymore in western countries (due to the fact that they were found unsafe), e.g. Allylestrenol (Turinal, manufactured by GEDEON RICHTER, Hungary ) is still available here. The unsafe prescribing habits of the doctors are encouraged by local and international pharmaceutical companies whose main concern is profit.
