Our research targets are the three indicated broad areas: age-associated diseases and conditions, as well as disability and physical function, including not only questions about ability to walk a quarter of a mile but performance tests, including walk times. Similarly, besides dementia we are also interested in cognitive functions, especially as it relates to brain aging in contrast to disease. What has been added to this Venn diagram is more of a focus on genetics because of the advances in molecular biology and the potential for applications to our studies, as well as continued interest on behavioral and environmental factors, but especially an emphasis on the interactions of these two elements affecting these broad areas. The identification of such interactions is the future challenge.
