These are the uses of our studies. They are based on concepts developed by Dr. Abraham Lilienfeld at Johns Hopkins to identify where epidemiology fits into the research continuum. We use the studies and the tools of epidemiology and biostatistics for an increased understanding of the etiology of age-associated diseases and conditions. But, to accomplish this there must be interdisciplinary considerations with a cross-check of population findings of patterns of risk with results from the bench scientist. Second, there must be avenues for ideas from clinical and lab science to be checked in the real world of communities. As is well appreciated by this audience, one must consider the totality of the evidence before reaching conclusions. Finally, a more unique aspect is the conscious goal of considering prevention and public health ramifications of our research.
