Our findings have implications in public health field, through adoption of preventive strategies. The alcohol intake increases the severity of the disease and therefore the risk of cirrhosis and cancer. Consequently, HH patients should be discouraged from having excessive alcohol consumption.

This study illustrates the complexity of multifactorial diseases. The phenotypic expression of HH is the result of interactions between genetic and environmental factors.
