This table presents the different types of HH, with the genes involved and the patterns of inheritance.

Beyond the main form, several rare types of HH may be distinguished:

- HH type 2A is a juvenile form. The gene responsible is located on the long arm of chromosome 1 but remained unidentified at this time,

- HH type 2B is a juvenile form linked to the HAMP gene (encoding for hepcidin),

- HH type 3 is linked to theTfR2 gene (encoding for a second transferrin receptor),

- HH type 4 is linked to the SLC11A3 gene (encoding for ferroportin, an intestinal iron transporter)

- HH type 5 is linked to a gene encoding subunit H of ferritin.
