Diesel exhaust is composed of different gases such as NO2, CO, CO2 and SO2 (depending on the sulfur content of the fuel) and of particulates which are describes as a core of carbon (elemental carbon) coated with adsorbed organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and some derivatives (such as nitro compounds) as well as other chemicals such as metals and inorganic compounds.
