Traditional medical treatment consists of first stop smoking then medications to open the airways of the lungs as much as possible (bronchodilators), medications to decrease inflammation in the airways (steroids), oxygen and antibiotics for pulmonary infections. Inhalers for the administration of bronchodilators and steroids are frequently used. Two treatments in the evaluation stage are Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS) and retinoic acid (ATRA).
