Amphotericin B deoxycholate (Fungizone) is cheaper than the lipid formulations (US wholesale price $17 per 50 mg vial. However, the regimens are prolonged and therefore expensive, require daily infusions for 20 days or (more usually) on alternate days over 30 days, and are not always well tolerated. Short course regimens using drugs such as AmBisome or Abelcet are possibilities, but all of these drugs except miltefosine outprice the realities of treatments in poor countries. Miltefosine in a testing state in 2003 has not been priced.
