Cohort studies

Although in less number than time series studies, there are several cohort studies about the impact of pollution on health, the first one is known as the six cities study. In it, a group of 8111 adults from six United States cities were followed in 1974, (Dockery et al., 1993).

Results show that, once controlled for smoking habit and other risk factors, mortality indices are associated with air pollution. Death risk in the most polluted cities was 26 per cent higher compared with those with lower pollution.
