A new Factories and Other Workplaces Act will be introduced later this year. This will ultimately extend safety and health protection to all 2.1 million employees, compared to the current 700,000 covered under the existing Factories Act. The first phase of the Act’s implementation will involve the healthcare, biomedical sciences, hotel and catering industries, and animal infirmaries. An important feature of the Act will be the imposition of duties and responsibility, not only on employers, but also designers, developers, suppliers, and other parties who have a role in generating workplace hazards.
