In 1875 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Losch first described amebiasis, proving the ameba’s pathogenicity by infecting a dog with fecal cysts from a hospital patient. Councilman & Lafleur at Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, Md, USA distinguished between bacillary and amebic dysentery in 1891.
