Cats had 270 cases in 2001 with very few rabid ones west of the Mississippi. Cases in cats are concentrated in the Washington-to-Boston northeast US area. Failure to vaccinate cats in such areas is due to a low index of suspicion based on ignorance of knowing that cats have sometimes 3 times as much rabies as dogs. In like fashion, wildlife mammals are ignored. Cats should be legally required to be vaccinated, at least in states like Virginia. Stray animals are very poorly or not controlled at all in many communities.
