This study measures the incidence of fractures in children from a defined geographical area over a calendar year. In this area all children with fractures are treated in three emergency room departments. Nobody lives more than 15 miles from a hospital. The person’s address was used to identify in which of the 82 small areas (census tracts) the person resides and to attach the appropriate Townsend score. The 82 areas were summed into 4 equal size groups (20, 21, 20, 21) and the population summed. Age standardised rates (0-4, 5-9, 10-14) were calculated and the rate of fractures per area calculated.
