Unique identification of each piece of equipment is essential, so that records of calibration and maintenance can be maintained. This number may be the serial number. Some pieces of equipment, however, do not bear a serial number, and in such cases the laboratory must assign a unique number. If desired, the laboratory may assign its own unique number to all equipment, cross-referencing this with serial numbers where these exist.
