An internal audit is an examination of the quality management system undertaken by someone within the organisation. These audits are the organisation’s own process for monitoring their system and its implementation.

Internal audits are conducted in addition to external audits.

External audits involve and an auditor from an accrediting or certifying body visiting the organisation to examine the QMS to ensure the it meets the standard requirements.
