An important purpose of document control is to provide an accurate historical record. For example if a modification is made to a laboratory method, it is important to know the date on which the modification took place.

Such information should be available as part of what is owed to the client for whom the testing was performed.

This may well be important in interpreting results retrospectively, or in trouble shooting if the test gives faulty results.
