3. Quality Assessment Programmes:

The purposes of carrying out QAPs are to:

  • assess the overall performance of the laboratory.
  • identify problems with assays.
  • collect information on testing practices.
  • develop strategies to improve and maintain the quality of testing.
  • establish an information exchange network.
  • Specimens In a QAP must be handled as a specimen for diagnostic purposes would be handled in the laboratory.

    Those involved in a QAP are the administrator (the reference laboratory from where the QAP is distributed) and the participants (those in the laboratories to whom the QAP is distributed).

    QAPs are used to monitor whether samples are being handled correctly, results are being appropriately recorded and that assays are performing and are being performed in an accurate and efficient manner.
