All 4 cases occurred in children or contacts of children who were immunized with only OPV. Before 1954, worldwide polio annually crippled more than half a million people of all ages (in the US alone about 21,000 paralytic cases each year), and often leading to death. Financing India for eradication may be a stumbling block at the moment.
