This table shows the ability of the most common types of epidemiologic studies to “prove” causation.

While randomized control trials are considered the gold standard, it is impossible to conduct such studies in most Public Health settings.

Cohort studies are usually seen as the strongest type of observational study that Public Health practitioners can conduct. But they take a long time and can be very costly to conduct.
