The Framingham Heart Study was the first cohort study to define and quantify cardiac risk factors and to relate findings to cardiovascular outcomes. (7) The major risk factors identified in this study include age, sex, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus, excessive body weight physical activity and elevated blood cholesterol. Unfortunately, the Framingham Heart study limited its enrollment almost exclusively to white American men and women (7).
