The question, then, was whether drugs including extracts of St. John’s Wort, working through by activating PXR, is capable of increasing the expression of CYP3A. Kliewer did this by using a simple reporter based assay, and showing in vitro that drugs known to up regulate CYP3A expression like this tuberculosis drug, rifampicin, up regulated, so that’s a good, positive control.
