MCHP’s solution to this problem was to develop an on-line database of research methodology centred around the Concept Dictionary. This dictionary offers consistent and standardized descriptions of concepts commonly used in population-based health research, clinical epidemiology, and health services research.

Content of the dictionary has been designed to provide ongoing operational support to researchers and programmers. The concepts contain answers to frequently asked questions, programming tips/cautions and descriptions of database analysis topics. They also include precise uses for each term, including nationally or internationally accepted amounts, ranges, percentages or other quantifiers.

The Concept Dictionary is organized alphabetically with numerous cross-references to facilitate access to related information. An internal version of the Dictionary is available only to MCHP employees and research associates; it contains information that is confidential in nature or irrelevant to external users.
