A median measure is more appropriate for, say, “average” income reporting for an entire company because it is likely there is a great disparity between what the Company President makes and what the Company Janitor makes. 

You can probably use a mean measure for, say, “average” income of one occupational group within the company since the range of income among a particular group of workers or professionals may not vary that much.
