This particular affliction had a great impact on what happened to Europe. It would take a plague to shake the pillars of authority during that time - the Church. Because the Plague was no respecter of persons, everyone succumbed. The Church exercised its authority by maintaining its communication through the use of Latin. When its clergy began to die off, they were replaced by people who spoke the common tongues. Without the Plague, this lecture could have been in Latin!
