Militaries have a long history of providing help to civilians during times of crisis. These crises include natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, as well as man-made disasters such as airline crashes and industrial accidents. The military is often equipped to collect data from areas inaccessible to civilian sources. Military clinicians and epidemiologists may be called upon to assist in the relief efforts, which are often based on the military’s ability to provide the logistic backbone for such a mission.
