Two previously accepted facets of the natural history of renal disease in diabetes are currently under challenge. It is thought that more than the 35 to 40% are at risk of at least some form of renal disease like microalbuminuria. Furthermore, the progression of overt nephropathy occurs to renal failure, once thought to be inevitable, is now not always seen.
