Shown here is the incidence of microalbuminuria (the early stage of nephropathy) in the EDC study and as can be seen a completely different incidence pattern is seen, to that if indeed there was a small group of individuals with renal disease who will develop full renal disease by 20 years of duration. Clearly in this slide no early (pre 20 year) peak of incidence is seen as would be expected. Indeed the incidence appears to be increasing with longer duration.
