- Pre-donation educational material:risk factor information pertaining to eligibility. Allows one to self defer prior to the interview process.
- Donor history exam: measures blood pressure, pulse, weight and hemoglobin or hematocrit; for the protection of the donor.
- Donor history questionnaire: questions about current and past health, travel and high risk behavior associated with known and potential transfusion transmitted agents. Questions are developed based on the requirements or recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration. About 5% of donors are deferred based on these questions.
- Confidential unit exclusion: allows individuals to apply a bar coded label confidentially to their donation material indicating their blood should or should not be used for transfusion. This allows individuals who may be too embarrassed to admit that they are ineligible to donate, to “tag’ their blood confidentially, as “not for use”.
- Callback: After donation a phone number is provided should the donor remember information that would have precluded them from donating, or should they become ill.
