    Stages in the natural history of disease and lead time of screening
Lead time is the amount of time gained by earlier detection of a cancer by screening than by later detection with the appearance of symptoms. This can be seen in the Figure above. If this lead time is not associated with a decrease in mortality, then lead time bias is present.
